Kirby Super Star is a collection of eight sub-games (plus one hidden) for the Super NES that was released in 1996. It's considered one of Kirby's longest and most popular of games, with a wide variety of levels, abilities, enemies, and secrets to find.
This game was the debut of Kirby's "hats", different headgear and appearances that would accompany a change in copy ability. In previous games, Kirby would only change color or wield a weapon, but now the Fire ability would grant a crown of flames, while the Yo-yo ability would have him wear a backwards baseball cap. With the exception of Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, all following games use these hats to differentiate his abilities.
It was also the first appearance of the 2-player Helper system, which made a return in lesser form in Kirby's Dream Land 3 with Gooey.
In Europe, this game was known as Kirby Fun Pak.

Game Play and Features
Kirby retains all of his signature abilities -- inhaling, floating, sliding, etc -- and gains the new ability to block attacks and produce helpers from copied abilities. Blocking provides a reduction in damage from most all attacks. Attacks that cannot be defended include grappling maneuvers and wide beam shots. A block can only be performed while standing on the ground, save certain conditions.
Helpers
One of Kirby Super Star's core features is Two Player Cooperative Gameplay, making the entire game multi-player material. If Kirby has a copy ability, simply pressing the A button triggers a second player Helper character to appear.
If a second player is not present, the Helper Character is controlled by AI until a second controller is activated by pressing any button. The AI is of a high quality, as even the computer controlled characters can both protect the first player, Kirby, and also venture into areas where the first player might not want to go.
However, Helper characters have lower health than Kirby, typically. Even an extremely well coordinated human player can go through many different helpers before the first player loses one life. Helpers can be considered disposable this way.
Kirby Super Star's co-op features are considered to be superior to that of Kirby & the Amazing Mirror's AI controlled player characters. This is because they don't wander around randomly, stay in groups, and they follow the first player into other rooms, much unlike the adventurous nature of the three other AI players in Amazing Mirror.
HP System
Kirby Super Star was the first game to feature a continuous HP measurement system, instead of having a discrete number of vitality bars as seen in earlier games. It is also used in following titles such as Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and Kirby Squeak Squad, but this is the only time the HP system was used on such an in-depth scale.
The meters don't give the exact number HP Kirby and the second player have. However, Helpers tend have less default HP than Kirby which varies upon the Helper in question. Another effect is that most enemies usually require more than one hit to defeat, depending on what ability is used.
Kirby, his copy abilities, different Helpers, enemies, and Bosses all have different HP and attack power. Kirby and the Helper's ability to block reduces damage while inflicting one point of damage to the enemy, if contact is made. There are also bosses that have attacks that cannot kill, but rather, halve the target's current HP. However, the game provides no direct means of telling us how much each character has of each or if they have other attributes, such as Defense Power and Elemental Weaknesses.
The only time attack power can be measured by fighting the Computer Virus boss, as the message system displays how much HP was lost in one single flurry of attacks. Based on its measurements, Kirby's most powerful normal ability is Hammer, as it can deal damage of up to 80 HP. Other powerful abilities include Stone, Wheelie Rider (when controlled by a second player), abilities that allow for grabbing enemies (instant kill), and no ability at all. His most powerful is Crash, doing 160 points of damage.
