Kirby's first debut on the Nintendo DS, in which Kirby has been transformed into a ball by the evil witch Drawcia. The player takes control of a magical paintbrush (the DS stylus), and helps guide Kirby or one of four other playable characters on a quest to defeat Drawcia and restore Dream Land to peace.

Taking a different spin on the traditional platformer genre, the player does not actually control Kirby, but simply leads him with a moving path, drawn by the stylus. Kirby would later star in Kirby Squeak Squad a more traditional platformer for the DS.

Story

One day, Kirby is taking a walk in his ever-peaceful home of Dream Land, when suddenly the scenery begins to distort and a strange witch appears. The witch began turning everything around into a painting. When she noticed Kirby she fled into a picture frame floating up in the sky, and Kirby chased after.

There he found a painting-like world. Kirby bravely confronted the witch, but she used her strange magic to turn him into a ball! He can only watch as she flies away.

Kirby looks down to see a Magic Paintbrush that the witch had dropped. When he touches it, it's transported to you in a beam of light. Now you have to guide Kirby with the Magic Paintbrush to defeat the witch, Drawcia!

Features and Game Play

Control

Kirby Canvas Curse is played entirely with the DS's touch screen. Kirby's movement isn't control directly with the touch pad. Instead, the stylus is used to draw lines on the screen that Kirby will roll along, using magic ink. Once the ink meter runs low, it refills on it's own. (Slowly when the character is in the air, but quickly when they are on the ground.) The ink can be used to stop Kirby as well by blocking him.

Tapping Kirby will cause him to dash forward to attack enemies or destroy obstacles. Making a loop with the ink will cause him to get an extra boost of speed as well. If left alone, Kirby will bounce and roll around until coming to a stop somewhere.

The stylus can also be used to destroy any blocks and to stun enemies. It must also be used to activate switches and to interact with other parts of Kirby's environment.

There are also many environmental obstacles such as lava which will harm Kirby, sand which increases traction, or ice which will reduce traction. Some stages are filled with static which makes drawing lines impossible, so Kirby can only be moved by tapping him, causing him to jump or dash.

The top screen is only used to display a map and other statistics, depending on the mode in which is being played.

Copy Abilities

Kirby can still use his Copy Abilities in this game. He can't inhale, but if he defeats an enemy with a power by dashing into it, he'll gain the ability that way.

Several staple abilities appear, as well as a redesigned Missile and the brand new Balloon.

Stages

There are seven main levels, each with three sub-levels which can be played in any order. After all three are beaten, a boss game must be passed to continue.

After a level is beaten, its stages become available in Rainbow Run]] mode, where they can be replayed in either Time Trial or Line Trial modes.

Rainbow Run

Time Trial
The goal of Time Trial is to get Kirby (or any other unlocked character) through a stage in as little time as possible. If the best times are beaten, 1-3 Medals can be won.
Line Trial
Similar to Time Trial, only instead of a time limit there is a limited amount of magic ink. A meter on the top screen shows how much ink there is, and when it reaches zero, the player receives no prize. Depending on the ink remaining at the goal, 1-3 Medals will be rewarded. (The normal ink meter still exists on the touch screen and they work independently of each other.)

Medal Swap

One of the goals of the game is to collect a total of 250 hidden Medals. Many are found hidden in the main game, while others are earned by beating scores in Rainbow Run, getting an A rank in level 3 of a Boss game, or by beating the game with different characters. (There are four others to unlock.)

The game features a Medal Swap, where medals can be traded for health upgrades, new stages for Rainbow Run, new styles of ink for their stylus, new characters, and an option which replaces all the in-game music with songs from Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland.

Features Unlocked Through Medal Swap

  • New ink styles for the Magic Paintbrush.
