This page is about Meta Knight in the anime. For the game version, please see Meta Knight (Games).

Meta Knight appears as a major character in the anime series Kirby of the Stars (Kirby: Right Back at Ya!) Compared to the games, his role is much clearer- he is undoubtedly on on Kirby's side, though he doesn't always show it. His character is given more depth, in addition to a complex past.

Appearance

Meta Knight is a round blue figure with purple feet and white gloves, his face covered by a round blue-gray metal mask. Curved, dark gray metal armor with gold trim covers his shoulders. He wears a blue and purple cape with a light green mantle. He is normally shown with his cape wrapped around his body. Unlike in the games, he is never shown with wings.

As with the games, it is assumed that under his armor he looks like Kirby. However, he is never shown unmasked during the series.

His eyes are yellow, but they often change color with his mood.

  • Green - Serious, thoughtful
  • Blue - Happiness, pride
  • Red - Anger, sensing danger
  • Pink - Amusement

The golden sword he wields is called Galaxia. It is an ancient, powerful weapon said to have a soul of its own. Its blade only materializes when unsheathed- normally it is only a hilt.

Background

At the beginning of the series, Meta Knight is shrouded in mystery. All that is known is how he serves Dedede, so when he helps Kirby and seems to be very knowledgeable about him, it raises suspicions. Fumu (Tiff) confronts him and he reveals the truth.

Like Kirby, Meta Knight is a member of the legendary group known as Star Warriors, and he is also a highly respected member of the Galaxy Soldier Army. A long time before, Meta Knight and his fellow soldiers had fought against Nightmare, the creator of the Holy Nightmare company and a massive army of demon beasts that he has used to take over much of the universe.

However, Nightmare's armies greatly outnumbered them, and eventually all but a few were killed. Meta Knight was one of the only survivors. He traveled through the galaxies because he knew that new Star Warriors would be born. He arrived at Popstar and decided to serve under King Dedede in Dream Land. It was only a cover, however. He knew that the king liked to order demon beasts from Holy Nightmare, and that a ship containing a young Star Warrior would hone in on the location.

It is never fully explained just how Meta Knight knows so much about Kirby, though there are many theories.

There is also the possibility that it was actually Meta Knight who was the failed creation of Nightmare instead of Kirby. However, the issue is left vague and it's difficult to say for sure one way or the other.

Personality

In a nutshell, Meta Knight is a very strange character. His outward appearance is the stereotypical 'stoic, angsty loner', but a closer look reveals he's rather quirky and often laid back- though not what you'd call a nice guy.

Despite the tragedies that occurred in his past, Meta Knight is not one to angst or brood openly about it. He does seem to prefer solitude or the company of a small number of close friends. He also has a habit of appearing and disappearing from seemingly nowhere- a trait that is often used for comedic effect.

Perhaps one of his strangest habits is how he is nearly always shown standing on top of things. Tables, statues, rocks, trees, houses- anything that will give him some elevation. It's not clear why he does this, but the theory is that he's making up for his height. (Or maybe he just likes to have a good view of things.)

He also seems to be quite vain, even arrogant, though not obviously so. He knows perfectly well that he's popular, and just finds it quite amusing. He likes to act like he knows more than he really does, and will try to maintain that image as best he can.

Meta Knight is not overt in showing his interest in things- though it's very apparent when he doesn't like something.

He has a great dislike of stupid people, especially those that get into trouble through their own incompetence. Though he's a Star Warrior, he often refuses to help Kirby or anyone else if he feels the situation is their own fault. He lives by the saying, "You reap what you sow." He's often described as being cold-hearted, and it's very true.

Despite his distaste for stupidity, for some reason he seems to enjoy watching Channel DDD on the small TV in his room. It's not clear if he actually likes it or if he just watches to try and catch his schemes in progress.

He may also have a sweet tooth, as his room contains a large jar of candy and other sweets. His drink of choice also seems to be tea, as he has supplies for it stored in his room as well. Meta Knight is never actually shown eating or drinking, however- it's not clear if he's able to with his mask on anyway.

In the original version, Meta Knight will frequently put English words randomly into his sentences, even if a Japanese equivalent exists. The reason for this is unknown. In the dub version he is given a Spanish accent like Zorro or the Taco Bell dog or something.

Relationships

Past

In the past, Meta Knight had many comrades in his fellow Star Warriors and members of the Galactic Soldier Army, but we only ever hear details on a select few.

One that he considered a good friend was the father of Knuckle Joe. Though never given an official name, one fan name is 'Jecra' (usually they all begin with a J). Joe's father was a very strong soldier, inspiring others to work harder.

However, one night tragedy struck and he was captured by Nightmare's forces. Meta Knight had resigned himself to his friend's death, but a short time later he returned. But he had given in to Nightmare and had come under his control. He attacked the Star Warriors with a legion of demon beasts, and Meta Knight was forced to kill him, presumably in self-defense. Before he died, Joe's father entrusted Meta Knight with a locket he always had around his neck that contained a photo of his infant son.

Garlude was a fellow Galactic Soldier that Meta Knight knew some years before Joe's father died. She and Meta Knight were sent on a mission to retrieve the Sacred Sword, Galaxia from the demon beast Kirisakin. Garlude was killed in the process but she allowed Meta Knight to obtain the sword, and he attempted to avenge her death.

Present

Meta Knight is most often in the company of his two followers, Sword Knight and Blade Knight. Many years before, Meta Knight had saved the two of them from a demon beast and they swore loyalty to him. Mainly they just do what he tells them to, even if they don't agree with his ideas and morals at times.

The other person he associates with often is the Cabinet Minister's daughter Fumu (Tiff). Why get along is a bit of a mystery, as they have very little in common, save for intelligence and hating Dedede. Meta Knight often gives her bits of advice when she needs it, but prefers to let her figure things out on her own even if he knows the real answer. Fumu tends to criticize him for being too cold-hearted.

While Meta Knight swore to look over Kirby, he rarely interacts with him directly. Early in the series he challenged him to a duel at Dedede's command, but actually did it in order to train him. Meta Knight is often very harsh with Kirby, and rarely intervenes to help- only when he knows Kirby is outmatched. He wants Kirby to learn for himself, and is always proud to see how Kirby skill grows.

Officially, Meta Knight is a servant of Dedede with the job of protecting him and the castle. However, he rarely follows through and makes his dislike of the king public, while still saying he's loyal. Dedede knows full well that Meta Knight isn't a reliable as he'd like, but he still keeps him around as Meta Knight does listen sometimes- typically whenever Dedede's commands coincide with his own plans to train Kirby. (And presumably because he's a better defense than his army of Waddle Dees.)

Meta Knight is rarely seen associating with anyone in the village, as he looks down on them as being stupid. He does still go down for shopping purposes however.
