Marx is a clever trickster who appears as the final boss of Milky Way Wishes after sending Kirby on a quest to serve his own evil ambitions.

When the sun and the moon get into a fight, sending Pop Star's day and night cycle into chaos, Marx comes to tell Kirby that if he activates all of the Dream Fountains on the neighboring stars, it will summon the giant comet NOVA, who is said to grant wishes. It isn't known if Marx is maybe a friend of Kirby's, or if they just met that moment, but regardless, Kirby rushes right off to do it.

In truth, Marx wanted NOVA's power for himself. After Kirby summons it, Marx knocks him aside and has NOVA grant him ultimate power so he can take over Pop Star.

Appearance

When Kirby first encounters Marx, he is a cute round fellow with big eyes, a tiny smiling mouth, two feet with big brown shoes, and a jester cap. He bounces around on top of a multi-colored ball, and isn't much bigger than Kirby himself.

After getting his wish from NOVA, Marx grows larger and sprouts a pair of strange wings with a golden frame, and instead of feathers or skin, only shimmering hexagon shapes.

Games

Marx does battle against Kirby on a desolate landscape. Unlike with the typical ultimate battle, Kirby may freely use any Copy Ability to battle with and is not restricted to an ultimate weapon. Almost none of his projectiles can be inhaled, however, so using an ability is the best way to combat this final boss.

Marx employs the strategy of flying above and unleashing a wide range of attacks below. He can teleport from and into the scene and often flies away. Sometimes to return, he will break through the ground from a shadowy circle.

Arsenals at Marx' disposal include dropping tiny seeds that grow into thorny vines, throwing out spinning blades from his wings that contain the Cutter ability, and vomiting out a freezing orb that splits upon hitting the ground and spreads out in both directions.

If Marx approaches in from the side of the screen, he spits out a volley of endless energy arrows that pelt Kirby. These can be defended.

If Marx splits his body in half, he leaves behind a black hole as he vanishes. The hole draws in Kirby and cannot be blocked. If it gets Kirby, he suffers a large amount of damage.

If Marx flies down to one side of the screen and opens his mouth, a massive ray is spit out. These beam will knock over Kirby even if he is blocking and must be avoided.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, at the end of The True Arena, Marx is seen drifting among the debris of the exploded NOVA. His body absorbs it, and he becomes Marx Soul.

Etymology

The origin of the name "Marx" remains up in the air due to the fact that the name was only given to him during localization. His original name, as seen in the Japanese version of the game, being "Mark". His original name, in itself, means nothing. Typical English names sound exotic to Japanese speakers, so it was only natural for an otherworldly figure such as himself to have an otherworldly name.

In their wisdom, Nintendo of America (of the time) renamed him Marx in the same hope that he would retain that exotic sounding feel. This can be backed up by Terra in Final Fantasy VI. Her name in the Japanese version is Tina, which is/was an uncommon, foreign name in Japan. So the name was then changed to Terra, which is similar to the French word "terre", meaning Earth.

So the name "Marx", like it's original, probably has no true meaning in itself. ... However, it has brought up a series of odd coincidences relating to historical and pop culture figures of the same name.

The most matching coincidence has to be connections made between Marx and Groucho Marx, an American actor and comedian. Groucho (1890 - 1977) holds a legacy in the five movies he starred in, along with the rest of the the Marx Brothers. The connection comes from the last feature Marx Brothers film, Duck Soup (1933), where Groucho can be quoted:

You're a brave man. Go and break through the lines. And remember, while you're out there risking your life and limb through shot and shell, we'll be in here thinking what a sucker you are.

Naturally, that was the exact same attitude Marx took on towards Kirby during Milky Way Wishes.

Also, The Marx surname can be English, German, or Jewish in origin.
