The latest Kirby game to be released features him in another title on the Nintendo DS. Unlike the previous entry in the series, Kirby Canvas Curse, this game has him in a traditional platform setting, with a standard control scheme.
In this outing, Kirby attempts to enjoy a slice of strawberry shortcake until it mysteriously vanishes. Unknown to him, it was stolen by a band of thieves known as The Squeaks, who have stolen other treasures as well. Kirby then sets off on a quest to recover his shortcake, and the other stolen goods.

Story
It's a beautiful day in Dream Land, and Kirby is attempting to enjoy a snack of strawberry shortcake. As he prepares to eat, it mysteriously vanishes, stolen by an unknown thief. Suspecting his usual nemesis, King Dedede, Kirby sets off to confront him and get his snack back.
After making it through his castle and battling King Dedede, he reveals that he knows nothing of the shortcake, and that he was robbed himself. At that moment, a band of mouse thieves known as the Squeaks reveal themselves as the bandits that took Kirby's shortcake and Dedede's stash. Just as they make a hasty retreat, Dedede grabs Kirby and tosses him into the thieves, sending them crashing through the castle and down a chasm, where Kirby continues his quest.
Characters
- Dedede has only a small role in this game, being the first boss Kirby fights instead of one of the last. And for once, he isn't the one who starts the trouble!
- The leader of the Squeaks, he's a mysterious rodent in a red had and cape who floats around instead of walking. He seeks a treasure chest containing an ultimate power.
- The strong man of the gang, Storo isn't too bright but makes up for it by sheer size and strength.
- A speedy yellow rodent who uses a variety of ninja-like attacks to gain the upper hand.
- The brains of the group Doc's body is small and fragile, so he flies around in his own UFO during battles, or uses other massive mecha creations.
- Kirby's mysterious rival appears once again- what is he trying to do this time?
Features and Game Play
Control
Unlike the previous title released on the DS, Kirby Canvas Curse, Kirby is controlled by using the D-Pad and buttons as opposed to the touch screen, which is now used to control the copy palette. As in most of his other games, Kirby can inhale enemies and copy those who have powers.
Also, as with Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, Kirby's inhale is limited so he cannot do it indefinitely, suggesting this may become a permanent feature.
Copy Palette
Kirby Squeak Squad plays as a standard Kirby platform game, with the exception of the Copy Palette. Throughout his journey, he may find items and abilities stored in bubbles (and with the Bubble, can make some of his own). These are stored in the copy palette, a visual representation of Kirby's stomach, on the bottom screen. Bubbles in the copy palette can be tapped to use the item inside, but disappear afterwards. This adds an element of strategy to the game, as some items have the potential to change a bad situation for the better. (On the other hand, it can also make things much too easy, since healing items like Maxim Tomatoes can be stored!)
Other new abilities are Animal and Metal.
Copy Scrolls
By finding Copy Scrolls hidden in various chests, Kirby can upgrade his abilities! They can become stronger or go farther- some can even be mixed with others.
Treasure Chests
Like Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, one of the key aspects of the game is treasure hunting. In a stage, there can be up to three treasure chests. The first two are usually small red ones, which Kirby will place in the copy palette upon touching. The third one will be a large white chest which will start a showdown with the Squeaks, who will attempt to steal it from Kirby. If they reach their base with the treasure first, Kirby will have to replay the level to get it back.
Collecting the treasures is necessary to proceed in the game, as one of five hidden Star Seals is hidden in each level. Without them, it is impossible to open the Star Door at the end of level six and continue.
See Kirby Squeak Squad Treasures for more info.
Graphics and Sound
Unlike the previous title on the DS, Kirby Canvas Curse, Squeak Squad features the same graphical style as Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Also similarly, most of the music and sounds effects are also taken from that and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, except with fewer remixes as there were in Kirby Canvas Curse.
Health System
Unlike most recent games, Kirby's health is not measured using health bars, but instead with an actual HP system, similar to the one used in Kirby Super Star. The amount of HP Kirby has is never given, but a bar is shown to give a general idea. Every attack, either by an enemy or Kirby, does a set amount of damage, but this is also not revealed, and must be experimented with to discover. Kirby can also expand his total HP by collecting treasure chests containing two vitality heart fragments, a total of eight in all.

Mini-Games
- Speedy Tea Time
- Similar to Speed Eaters, the Kirbies and Storo sit around a table with a platter in the center. When it is raised, they attempt to be the first to eat any shortcake underneath. The first to fill their vitality wins.
- Smash Ride
- The Kirbies, Spinni, and a group of Squeakers all ride around a small arena on Warp Stars. Their goal is to be the one who knocks the most riders off of the arena in 30 seconds.
- Treasure Shot
- The Kirbies and Doc attempt to be the first to get the treasure inside the three treasure chests. The first person to hit the item held inside gets it, but not all of it is treasure!
- Boss Endurance
- Similar to Boss Butch from Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Boss Endurance from other games, Kirby fights all the bosses in order. If he wins, he receives nothing but a congratulatory image.
- Extra Mode
- This is what is unlocked for beating the game 100%- you can play the game again with a timer and try to beat your own score. That's it! You can't use it to unlock anything else.
Version Differences
In Japan, this game was known as Hoshi no Kaabii: Sanjou! Dorocche-dan, which roughly translates to Kirby of the Stars: Arrival of the Dorocche Gang. The North American and Australian name is derived from this, referencing the arrival of the Squeaks. In Europe, this game was known as Kirby Mouse Attack.
The box art is mostly the same in all regions, except the game's logo, which is changed depending on the region. Kirby's expression is also changed to an angry one in the US release.
