This page is about Kirby in the anime series. For information about the game version and Kirby in general, see Kirby (Games).
In 2002, Kirby first starred in his own anime series. Instead of being an exact copy of the games, it has many differences and is considered a completely separate universe. Because of this, the Kirby in the anime is not quite the same as the one in the games.

Appearance
Kirby is still round and pink, but his eyes are larger, and his design more refined, giving him an even cuter look. (Later Kirby games have adopted this style of Kirby as the official one.) The primary difference between this and the games version is the feet- they are a deeper, almost burgundy color instead of plain red. It isn't known why this color change was made. Perhaps it looked better on screen, or it was intentionally done to distinguish the two versions.
Background and Personality
When a giant monster is devouring the sheep of Pupu Village (Cappytown), the people turn to the wise stone statue Kabu for advise. He tells them that their home is doomed, but there is hope- a legend says that a Star Warrior called Kirby will come to save them.
Kirby first crash lands on Pop Star in his little yellow starship, and everyone is shocked to find he's just a tiny little pink creature.
According to Meta Knight, Kirby was intended to have slept in his starship for 200 years, but was woken up too early when his ship detected the Demon beasts on Pop Star. Because of this, Kirby is only a baby and has little knowledge or experience. Thankfully he has amazing natural abilities that allow him to still battle various enemies.
Kirby doesn't speak much, mainly only saying 'poyo', but he can express himself in other ways. He has a short attention span, and of course he loves to eat, his favorite food being juicy watermelons. Kirby will always try to save people who are in trouble, but sometimes he needs help from his friends. Kirby lives up in a little dome-shaped house outside of town, though he prefers to sleep up in a tree outside.
Kirby's true origins are revealed by Kabu, who tells the people of the Emperor of Darkness, Nightmare, who created the Holy Nightmare company which dominates the universe. Nightmare creates demon beasts to serve him, but sometimes they do not obey- and Kirby was one of his failed creations, who Nightmare threw out in a rage. No one knows how Kirby ended up in his starship after this, or how Meta Knight knows so much about him.
According to legends, Star Warriors are said to be the ones who will bring peace to the universe. Kirby's destiny is to defeat Nightmare, but he must first gain new abilities and battling experience.
Abilities
Kirby retains nearly all of his abilities from the games, with some variations.
His inhale is greatly increased in power, created a much larger vortex which can draw in enemies or items from greater distances. Kirby usually does a quick running motion before inhaling, kind of like he's 'charging up'. However, Kirby can't inhale forever, and will begin to get tired after a time. (This feature is adopted in later Kirby games beginning with Kirby & the Amazing Mirror.
Kirby's Copy Abilities are used in the anime as well. Normally he will inhale an item or an enemy's attack instead of inhaling the enemy themselves to gain one though. Most of his abilities are altered or just more powerful than in the games.
Kirby can float by inhaling air and inflating his body, but he doesn't do it very often, likely because it's so slow. He also can't breathe underwater as he seems to be able to do in the games- though this tends to vary from episode to episode.
Relationships
Kirby's two best friends are the siblings Fumu (Tiff) and Bun (Tuff), who both live up in Dedede's castle. They're the two kids who first helped him after he crash landed, though Kirby ended up having to help them too.
Fumu is the only person who can summon Kirby's Warp Star, because she loves and cares for Kirby. They have a kind of mother/child or older sister/baby brother bond, with Fumu looking out for him but usually respecting the fact he's a baby more than other characters.
Kirby and Bun often play together, but because of Kirby's age he tends to be left out or get teased. (Which greatly annoys Fumu.)
Meta Knight acts as a kind of mentor to Kirby, sometimes training him or giving advice to help him out. However, Meta Knight rarely helps Kirby directly because he wants Kirby to learn on his own. Since Kirby is the only hope they have against Nightmare, he needs to become stronger quickly. Though Meta Knight can be cold towards him at times, he helps him when he really needs it, and is always proud to see him advance.
King Dedede is very jealous of Kirby and is constantly trying to get him kicked out of Dream Land somehow. Usually he orders demon beasts, but he's used a large variety of bizarre methods, from trying to stop him from inhaling, to burying him in cream pie. There's some suggestion that Dedede doesn't really hate Kirby, but rather he likes having him as a rival to give himself something to do.
Lololo and Lalala are also friends of Kirby, though they have only a small role. Rick, Coo and Kine also appear, but they aren't as close with Kirby as in the games. He's probably better friends with Kine in this case.
