The classic game of pinball takes new form with the familiar faces of Dream Land. Establishing the trend to come, this first foray out from platforming games turns Kirby into the ball as the player flips him around at obstacles to rack up points.

Story

The sneaky King Dedede has gone to the bizarre Pinball Lands and dares the hero to follow. Kirby musters up his courage and follows after. Here, he must venture through three separate pinball machines and topple the titan at the top of each tower. Doing so gives him a key that will help unlock the way to face his nemesis, the great king.

Game Play

The game follows standard pinball rules. The player can only swat at the ball, Kirby, with two flippers. There are no abilities to alter its course. They can also "tilt" the machine to coax Kirby a certain direction, but tilting too much will cause the flippers to lock up for a short time.

As with most pinball, the player is to keep the ball from slipping down the drain. Doing so costs the player one of their limited balls. Different from standard pinball is the chance of redemption after a loss. Kirby lands on a Springboard and can be fired back up into the level, even to the top scene if timed right. As more attempts are made, the Springboard reduces in size and power, lessening the chances of a saved ball.

There are three different stages for the player to navigate, each made up from three scenes. Each has creatures and obstacles that react and operate a certain way for the player's benefit or not. Which land is played is chosen in an overview area with the locations displayed by name. A cannon is present in the drain to ensure the player can get to one of the levels.

The scenes each contain a Warp Star that can take the player somewhere new. On the lowest scene, the player is sent back to the selection area. The middle portion flies off to the area's Bonus Game for extra points. At the top, Kirby is brought to face the boss of that Pinball Land.

The bosses are battled by batting Kirby directly into them. For these fights, Kirby is his regular self and not curled up as a ball. A Warp Star resides in between the flippers, and sends the player back to the Pinball Land if missed. Once the boss is hit enough times, they leave behind a key. This must be collected by the player, or the victory does not count.

Once all three keys are collected, a means to reach King Dedede is provided on the selection area.
