Kirby's second action game on the Game Boy looks much like Kirby's Dream Land at a glance, using many of the same graphics. But it's much bigger and improves greatly on the original formula, with improved controls and the addition of the Copy Abilities first seen in Kirby's Adventure.

Kirby can also now join with one of three Animal Friends to get through tough spots and give his abilities new effects.

In addition, the game had special features when used with the SNES add-on, the Super Game Boy. Each of the Rainbow Islands would appear in a different color, and there would be a special border around the screen showing his Animal Friends.

Story

In Dream Land, there are seven islands called the Rainbow Islands, where rainbows always form. It is said that treasures called the Rainbow Drops are hidden away on these islands. But one day, the rainbows suddenly vanished, because a new foe called Dark Matter had hidden the Rainbow Drops.

Kirby must team up with his new friends to retrieve the Rainbow Drops and stop the evil Dark Matter from turning Dream Land into a world of darkness.

Game Play and Features

As with his other action games before this, Kirby's basic repertoire of attacks remains the same. He can walk, jump, float, spit air puffs, inhale, and spit out or devour his enemies. As with Kirby's Adventure, he can also spit streams of water when submerged now in all four directions. However, while he can duck on land he cannot slide. He also cannot run.

His Copy Abilities are reduced in number in this game to just seven. However, by teaming up with his friends, Kirby's abilities become even more varied, with 21 possible combinations.

To get 100% completion in the game, all of the Rainbow Drops must be retrieved. Some are hidden, others in plain site- but all need a certain ability/friend combination to retrieve them.

Animal Friends

The Animal Friends are the biggest addition to this game. Without them, Kirby would be unable to get certain hidden items or go through certain areas.

Rick the Hamster
Rick can't fly, but his claws give him good traction on slippery ice.
Coo the Owl
Coo's powerful wings allow him to fly against strong winds.
Kine the Ocean Sunfish
Kine can swim against powerful currents, but he's rather awkward on land.

Levels

Kirby and his friends traverse the Rainbow Islands by means of a Warp Star. The islands must be completed in order, and each have a different number of sub-levels.

After defeating the boss of each level, they can be faced again in a Bonus Game where Kirby must collect a certain number of stars. These must all be completed to get 100%.

Grass Land
Boss-Whispy Woods
Large open areas characterize this area. Kirby rescues Rick here.
Big Forest
Boss- Nruff and Nelly
Naturally, this island is covered with huge forests, and Coo can be met here for the first time.
Ripple Field
Boss- Sweet Stuff
A tropical island of palm trees and many underwater areas. Naturally, Kine is found here.
Iceberg
Boss- Ice Dragon
This icy place is home to foes like Master Pengi. Rick is very useful in some areas.
Red Canyon
Boss- Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright
A hot, dry desert-like island.
Cloudy Park
Boss- Kracko
This island is covered by clouds, and some of the levels are nothing but! But be careful, the clouds will vanish under Kirby's feet.
Dark Castle
Bosses- King Dedede, Dark Matter
The final level is one of Dedede's castles- only it's been corrupted because of Dark Matter's influence. Dedede is the final boss here, followed by Dark Matter itself if all Rainbow Drops have been collected.

Ending

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Bad Ending

Without all of the Rainbow Drops means Kirby will only fight King Dedede. Upon defeating it, Kirby and his friends will walk away from the Dark Castle, apparently triumphant, as the cast of character displays on the screen below them... But at the end Kine looks back, perhaps sensing something is wrong, before following the others.

Good Ending

With all the Rainbow Drops, Kirby defeats both forms of Dark Matter with the Rainbow Sword and falls, apparently knocked unconscious... He appears like a shooting star that all the Animal Friends see from a distance. He wakes up and dances around in the sky with the sword's power, and uses it to paint a rainbow across the sky.

Version Differences

Unlike most other Kirby games, KDL2 has to exact same box and cartridge art in Japan and the US. However, there were a few small changes in the game itself.

In the original game, the sacks that contain the Animal Friends could also contain Gooey and Chao, a little girl. However, Chao was changed to Blob, a female version of Gooey, overseas.
