Kirby's Avalanche (Kirby's Ghost Trap in Europe) was released for the SNES in North America on February 2, 1995, a day after the European release date. It was the first Kirby game released for the SNES, and was never released in Japan.

Avalanche was made by HAL's United States branch rather than the Japanese branch that had made all of the past games, which explains why it was never released in Japan. As a direct result, some people consider the game noncanonical to plot.

The game is a clone of the Japanese Puyo Puyo series, and is often compared to Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine due to this similarity. However, it was a Player's Choice title for the SNES, and was praised by Nintendo Power.

Story

Note: The plot and character development of Avalanche is considered non canonical.

The Avalanche competition is a great event in Dream Land, and just about anyone can be found participating in one of the puzzle competitions, from Cappies to King Dedede and everyone in between. To be declared the champion of the Avalanche competition, a competitor must win the final event at the Dream Fountain. If any two people competing see each other on the way there, they must challenge each other; the winner moves forward, while the loser must turn back home.

Kirby himself partakes in the competition, and faces off against many recognizable from past games as he progresses to the Dream Fountain. In a break from tradition, a normally silent Kirby argues and condescendingly talks with his competitors, creating a rebellious character that some feel doesn't match the Japanese design of Kirby's personality.

Game Play

The game play is identical to Super Puyo Puyo, released for SNES beforehand. It is another of the Kirby franchise's many puzzler games, with a strategic focus on creating chain combos known as Avalanches. By linking together four same colored blobs in any manner, they disappear and cause any blobs above them to fall. The falling blobs can cause a new reaction, and this process can continue. As chains are accomplished, a special non-colored blob type falls on the opponent's playing field. These do not connect with like colored blobs and must be eliminated by a near by color connection.

Music

KRR's Kirby's Avalanche Sound Collection [2]

Much of Avalanche's music is remixed/remastered music from Kirby's Adventure, as a bulk of the game's characters are.
