The only Kirby game on the NES, Kirby's Adventure is arguably tied with Kirby's Super Star as a favorite of the series' fandom. It followed Kirby's Dream Land, and is the second game starring Kirby. It was also the first appearance of his copy abilities, which would become a mainstay of the series.

Story
A confused and frustrated Kirby awakens from his usual afternoon nap after not having a single dream. It turns out that everyone else in Dream Land is having the same problem! So he goes to the Fountain of Dreams only to find King Dedede bathing in it, and that the fountain's power source, the Star Rod, missing.
In the Star Rod's absence, the inhabitants of Dream Land have become restless and irritated, unable to dream. Kirby takes it upon himself to face each of Dedede's followers, who guard seven broken pieces of the Star Rod, and return the magical item to its rightful place.
Features and Game Play
Kirby's Adventure introduced Kirby's now-standard ability to inhale enemies and derive powers from them. Although this was not an option for every enemy, a percentage of them - including mini-bosses - would grant Kirby their special powers upon his swallowing them. In addition to gaining powers from enemies, other basic abilities were granted to the player such as sliding, water gun, and crashing down.
Other implementations that would carry throughout the series were percent completion indicators and level travel. Rather than being a linear game that was simply played through and beaten, the world was greatly expanded from its humble origin on Game Boy. With saving, levels were broken up into several individual stages that had their own secrets and could be revisited to uncover them.
Levels
Dream Land is broken up into eight different levels, each of which is made up of numerous stages, except for the last level that consists of the final battle against Nightmare.
The level overview can be freely explored by Kirby where he can choose what door to enter. In addition to the Boss battles and stages, some doors lead to bonus rooms such as a Mini-Game, Arena, or Museum that can reward the player.
After completing a stage, Kirby will stake a flag next to the doorway. If the stage was cleared completely, the door will change color from white to orange. If something was missed, it remains white. As more areas and secret switches are uncovered, more of the overview will become accessible.
