Dedede is the main antagonist of Kirby's anime series and one of the most prominent characters. His constant scheming and trouble making creates the plot for most of the episodes.

Appearance
Dedede is a chubby blue penguin wearing a red robe with white fur trim, and a red hat with a gold band around it and a bun-shape on the front. He also wears a dark red and orange zig-zag sash around his middle. His feet are yellow and he wears yellow gloves.
His look is changed from the games in that he can be considered much less cute. Mainly his head is much smaller in comparison with his body, and he doesn't have the lighter colored stomach.
A design similar to Dedede's anime design began being used in the games starting with Kirby Squeak Squad.
At night Dedede wears a mint green shirt and long hat with the same red and orange design on the sash he wears during the day.
Background
Nothing is known about Dedede's past, where he comes from, or how he ended up as the ruler of Dream Land. What is known is that he has apparently ruled it for the past 300 years- unless that's an exaggeration.
Personality
Dedede's personality and interests vary wildly between the sophisticated and the childish. He flaunts his royal status and power, but he's also very immature and impulsive, and prone to crying and throwing a fit if he doesn't get his own way. Though he's apparently very old physically, his mental age is much lower.
Dedede is best described as a bully, and is quite sadistic at times, saying he enjoys nothing more than the suffering of others. He loves to pull pranks and generally make peoples' lives miserable- and his pranks are usually on the dangerous side. He's selfish and cares little about the well-being of his people, and uses their tax dollars to buy himself all manner of expensive toys and demon beasts from Holy Nightmare Co.- usually in an attempt to beat Kirby. Of course he has a huge entitlement complex and never pays his debt if he can help it, and usually the money has to be collected by more sneaky methods.
One of Dedede's favorite things is food, and he has an appetite that almost matches Kirby's. His drink of choice is wine and he likes rich foods, but he'll really eat just about anything- especially junk food. (Though he apparently dislikes anything pickled.) He also loves golf, and one of his obsessions is trying to chop down Whispy Woods' Forest and build his Royal Country Club. To him the environment is just something to be used or destroyed when it's in his way- however he also seems to have an affinity for bird-watching and can name many different species.
Dedede isn't the brightest, being unable to read or do basic math. He tends to make a lot of bad decisions as well, but every once in a while he'll do something that surprises everyone.
In the dub version, Dedede is given a southern accent and often misuses or mispronounces words. In the original he has no accent, but almost always ends his sentences with 'zoi'- which doesn't actually mean anything.
Dedede's bedroom reflects mainly the childish side of him. It's done entirely in a nautical theme, with a bed shaped like a boat and waves painted on the walls. It also features a large TV, suit of armor, giant stereo, and other odd things.
Relationships
Dedede sees Kirby as a rival and is quite jealous of his popularity. Most of his time is spent coming up with ways to kick Kirby out of his kingdom or to turn the people of the village against him somehow. In truth he likes Kirby in a way, apparently because he makes his life more interesting. Kirby of course likes Dedede despite how he treats him, but Kirby likes just about anyone.
Dedede's sidekick/assistant is the snail Escargon (Escargoon) and they're often seen together. Escargon's job is basically to look after the king, and he also helps him with his various schemes with his knowledge of robotics and other things. Dedede mainly uses Escargon as a punching bag and takes his anger out on him. Despite this, Escargon stays loyal to him, and apparently likes the king quite a lot for unknown reasons.
Dedede is a frequent customer of Holy Nightmare Co. and so he tends to speak with their representative Customer Service quite often using the video display in his throne room. Customer Service is quite adept at getting Dedede to buy whatever strange product or demon beast they're having a 'special' on at the moment, and while he's polite to him on the surface he still finds him quite aggravating and regularly tricks him out of his money. The two of them often try to get even with each other with different tricks- though Customer Service usually comes out on top with all the resources HNM has.
Fumu (Tiff) is Dedede's biggest opponent and criticizes him publicly more than anyone else. She's constantly suspicious of him, but often can't find enough evidence or do anything to stop him until it's too late, so Dedede doesn't worry about it too much. He often makes fun of her just because he can. Dedede just sees her brother and other children as pests.
Dedede is served by a massive army of Waddle Dees. It is said that they will serve anyone who gives them food and a place to stay, and so they silently go about their duties cleaning, making food and ineffectually defending the castle. Despite their weakness, they can be effective in large groups and their loyalty to Dedede is unwavering- providing he feeds them. Whether Dedede likes them or not depends on how useful they're being at the moment.
