Dark Matter is one of the boss characters that Kirby must fight in his game series.
Dark Matter, and two closely related foes 0 (Zero) and 0² (Zero Two), has been one of the biggest threats to Kirby's home of Pop Star, as well as other places. Dark Matter has many shapes that it takes, but it's main power is its ability to possess living beings and control them, often distorting their bodies in twisted ways.
Its origins, it's motivations, all are unknown. It does not speak, but it only seems driven by a desire to spread it's darkness everywhere it can. It's also unknown if each separate Dark Matter is it's own entity, or if they're all part of a single massive creature.
While it's form varies, all Dark Matter has one thing in common- a single eye, usually blood red. It often appears as a massive black cloud with snaking tendrils that possess all it comes in contact with.
The only thing that can defeat Dark Matter are certain legendary items that Kirby must acquire somehow.

Kirby's Dream Land 2
Dark Matter
Kirby first encounters Dark Matter after it has invaded the Rainbow Islands and possessed King Dedede. It controls him, giving him greater strength and speed than he normally would. If Kirby has collected all of the magical Rainbow Drops, Dark Matter will be exorcised from the king's body. Kirby will gain the Rainbow Sword, and fly into the heavens to do battle.
This first form -- officially just called Dark Matter -- resembles a swordsman. It seems to have a separate head with a single eye behind a mask, and black, hair-like spikes shooting up over it. It wears a flowing gray cape and purple shoulder guards.
It wields a sword, with which it will slash at Kirby. It also fires orbs of energy that can be aimed straight or at a 45 degree angle up or down. The main way to harm this form is for Kirby to send them bouncing back using the Rainbow Sword, although slashing with the weapon can damage it as well. Dark Matter will also dash across the screen and fire smaller, faster energy waves. These can only travel straight forward, are fired in rapid succession, and cannot be reflected.
"Real" Dark Matter
The second form is considered Dark Matter's true form in this game. It becomes an orb shape with the single eye, smaller purple orbs on its back. As with its previous form, these can be deflected back at it. It is much more difficult to battle, moving rapidly and attacking without warning.
It will fire long beams of energy from its eye that go across the screen in a straight line or a barrage of smaller shots in a circular pattern. It will also attempt to harm Kirby by ramming into him either by plainly shuttling about or diving at him in a boosted dash.
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Dark Matter returns once again, streaking through space and shattering the rings around Pop Star as it descends as a black mass that spreads, possessing many of Dream Land's inhabitants.
King Dedede
After battling Dedede for a while, the true enemy reveals himself. The King will float in the air and have his stomach open up to reveal the ominous eye of Dark Matter. This will either shoot a triad of homing dark energy shots at Kirby or chase him down with a pair of biting jaws. After defeating this form, Dark Matter leaves its host and takes to the sky for the final battle in the Hyper Zone.
Dark Matter
Dark Matter appears in its traditional state, a black globe with a single eye. it will dart around the scene while shooting rays and releasing the orbs from its back as Kirby uses the Love-Love Stick against it.
After defeating Dark Matter, 0 must be fought.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
In this game, as Dark Matter takes over Ripple Star and Ribbon escapes with the Crystal, three smaller Dark Matter chase after her all the way to Pop Star. There, they possess various other characters that Kirby must battle.
Dark Rimuro
This one possesses Kirby's friend Waddle Dee, changing his form to that of a Waddle Doo. (Which is the only case
Dark Rimura
The second one possesses the girl painter Adeleine.
Dark Rimuru
The final one possesses King Dedede.
Miracle Matter
This white polygon form is covered in red eyes. It changes to various other forms, each reflecting one of the abilities Kirby can obtain. That power, or a combination using it, must be used to damage it.
0² (Zero Two)
The final boss, only fought if all of the Crystal Shards are collected.
Trivia
Dark Matter is also the name of a real phenomenon, though thankfully not something that threatens to kill everyone. Dark matter composes much of the mass of the universe, but can't be directly seen or measured- we only know it's there because of how it affects things around it. It's an extremely complicated topic that we won't get too far into here!
