Dark Castle is an ominous floating fortress. It is seventh and last in the chain of Rainbow Islands, following Cloudy Park. The scenery consists of chambers, bridges, and rooms build from stone bricks.
Dark Castle consists of seven stages. As parts are progressed through on the left side, stages seemingly appear again but in a mirrored orientation, making some of the only stages that are played from right to left. At the end of every stage, there is one of the seven mini-bosses to be fought.
The leader of the island is King Dedede. If all of the Rainbow Drops have been collected when he is defeated, the battle with Dark Matter ensues. Otherwise, a false ending is given to the player. This level does not feature an end mini-game since Dedede always remains to be battled.
The Rainbow Drop is held in the seventh stage. It can be accessed with the use of a chain of five copy abilities which is revealed in a dark room by using Kine and his Spark power.
