One peaceful day in Dream Land, Kirby is just
about to snack on a delicious piece of strawberry shortcake,
when a Waddle Dee zips out of no where and grabs it! Kirby
figures King Dedede must be behind it, (as he has a history of
doing such nefarious deeds) and heads to his castle to
investigate.
On his way he encounters a group of robbers
called the Dorocche Gang, but continues to the castle after
escaping from them. He battles King Dedede and defeats him, but
before he can open the treasure chest which he assumes contains
his shortcake, the Dorocche Gang appears from no where and takes
the chest! Dedede throws Kirby at the gang, causing the floor to
crumble, sending them all falling into the depths of Popstar,
where Kirby's journey to retrieve his shortcake really begins
But is there more going on than he realizes...?
Cast
Kirby - The titular hero. Kirby's not the
brightest bulb, but he knows what he likes- and that's his
shortcake! He'll do anything to get it back, even going to the
ends of Popstar!
Dedede - Dedede's been downgraded to only
a small role in this game, but he sets things in motion! What's
with that chest of his that the gang stole? It must be something
more important than just shortcake...
The Dorocche Gang (The Squeaks) -
Your main foe throughout the game, the members of this thief
gang will try to steal the treasures Kirby finds throughout the
levels.
Dorocche (Daroach) - The leader of the
gang, he's a mysterious sort who flies instead of walks. He
wears a snazzy red hat and cape, and carries a special cane with
magic powers. He rarely fights on his own, instead sending his
lackeys to do the dirty work. He's on a quest to find some kind
of 'ultimate power'. It doesn't seem like he'd be interested in
Kirby's shortcake.
Doc - The brains of the group, Doc is tiny
and weak, but makes up for it by using gigantic mecha. He
normally travels around in a UFO.
Spin (Spinni) - The speedy one, Spinni uses ninja
stars and clawed weapons as he chases Kirby to get his treasure.
Stron (Storo) - And the brawn: Stron is a
gigantic, plump blue mouse who attacks with hammers and his
massive bulk.
Chuulin (Squeakers) - Tiny, numerous and
adorable, don't let their cute looks fool you! They'll lob bombs
at Kirby during battle, backing up their bigger gang members.
Meta Knight - This mysterious figure
returns, but what are his intentions?
Script
Scene 1:
Early afternoon in Dream Land... It's so peaceful
that even the clouds are drowsy. And now it's Kirby's favorite
time of the day- snack time.
Today's yummy snack is a sweet, fluffy slice of
strawberry shortcake. Time to dig in...
WHOA! The cake that Kirby was about to eat has
suddenly vanished. The scrumptious, berry-topped slice of
mouth-watering goodness...
No doubt about it! This must be the work of that
greedy King Dedede!
Well, there's no time to waste! Gotta get that
cake back!
And that's how Kirby's latest fantastic adventure
begins...
Scene 2:
(After defeating Dedede)
What's this? Someone's stolen King Dedede's
treasure chest. Of course, he doesn't know a thing about the
strawberry shortcake.
So what's going on? Who's really behind the
disappearing shortcake?
Suddenly a whirlwind appears, bringing a band
of big-eared strangers.
Who are these guys? A band of thieves known as
the Squeaks. With treasure chests in tow, they begin to march
jauntily away.
King Dedede acts quick as a wink! He
grabs Kirby and hurls him at the Squeaks!
What a shot! He throws a perfect strike! The
Squeaks teeter and lose their balance. They all tumble into a
deep chasm, taking the treasure with them.
Surely the shortcake is part of the lost loot.
It looks like Kirby's quest isn't over yet!
Scene 3:
(After defeating Dorocche the first time)
At last the Squeaks are in sight. Kirby is
closing in... His precious shortcake is within reach!
What in the world?! Meta Knight swoops down
the nabs the treasure! In a flash he sails through the star
door, leaving Kirby behind.
The star door will never open up without the
five star seals.
(If you have all five seals...)
Kirby carefully places the five star seals in
the door and... The lock breaks and the star door opens. Now for
the cake!
Scene 4:
(After defeating Meta Knight aboard the
Halberd)
Meta Knight has been defeated! The chest
holding the strawberry shortcake is at hand.
Kirby approaches the chest to rescue his
delicious snack...
It's the Squeaks! They followed Kirby! And now
they're stealing the treasure chest! Without hesitation, the
Squeaks open the chest.
Oh, Kirby's cake...
But there's no cake in the chest, only dark,
eerie cloud of smoke! The smoke envelops the Squeaks and
disappears into space.
How awful! At this rate the strawberry
shortcake will be lost forever. Kirby must find the cake and
solve the mystery of the creepy smoke...
And so, he departs for the stars!
Scene 5:
(After defeating Dark Dorocche and Dark
Nebula/Zero)
The treasure chest was the prison of Dark
Nebula, ruler of the underworld.
Meta Knight knew the secret of the chest. He
fought Kirby to prevent Dark Nebula from being released.
The Squeaks decided to look elsewhere for
treasure. They've left for parts unknown.
It looks like peace will return to the land.
But... Where did that slice of strawberry shortcake disappear
to?
Thoughts of that lost snack fill Kirby's head
as he goes home.
THE END
Scene 5:
(If you beat the game with 100%)
A short while later...
A delectable strawberry shortcake arrives for
Kirby from the Squeaks. Perhaps it's an apology for all of the
trouble they caused.
But Kirby doesn't really care why they sent
it. It's snack time! With shortcake waiting to be munched, Kirby
is truly happy at last!
THE END (REALLY!)
Notes and Version
Differences
Aside from names, there were some other odd
differences between the Japanese and English versions.
Dark Nebula is originally called Dark Zero.
'Ruler of the Underworld' is a mistranslation. More accurately
it's something like 'Lord of Darkness'.
The game's English script for some reason
never calls Dorocche/Daroach by his name- it only ever refers to
the entire gang as the Squeaks. Even when only Dorocche is
possessed, or only he is present, it never calls him by name.
It may be because in the original, both the
name of the character and the gang is 'Dorocche', but it should
still be obvious. Silly lazy translators.
