From my understanding, i'm pretty sure My Immortal is a really crappy edgy Sonic fanfic or something like that. I know it has something to do with Sonic.
It has nothing to do with Sonic. In fact, it has barely anything to do with what it’s apparently supposed to be a fanfic of, Harry Potter.
From what I know, Harry Potter is the largest category on Fanfiction, so it makes sense that there’d be So Bad It’s Good Fics, Troll Fics, etc..
Most troll fics these days try to be like My Immortal. I don’t like that. I didn’t really care for My Immortal in the first place, and the fanfics that try to replicate it lack any creativity or surprising aspects. I want more troll fics to take risks. And that’s where Hogwarts School of Prayer and Miracles comes in.
Instead of being (or attempting to be) a goth, high school fanfic with constant swearing and spelling errors, HSoPaM is another Harry Potter fanfic, but this time it takes a different approach. It was supposedly written by a mother (appropriately known by the username of “ProudHouseWife”) who didn’t want her children to read Harry Potter books due to containing magic and witches, so she set out to make her own version. Said version revolves around Harry, now apparently an American, becoming a Christian, giving up evolution and birthdays in the process, and attending the titular HSoPaM.
This fanfic is genius. As stupid as it sounds, a mother attempting to write a “safer” version of a story for her children could very much happen in this day and age. Not only that, but it managed to make THREE groups of people angry. Harry Potter fans, parents who believe Harry Potter is fine for children to read, and those who were quick to point out that ProudHouseWife got various facts about Christianity and other religions wrong.
It also took one great cue from My Immortal that many tend to forget that made My Immortal so great in the first place; It’s difficult to tell if it’s a troll fic.
Aside from the last chapter and a few subtle details(How did this random mother find out about the Fanfiction site?), it’s near impossible to tell if it’s a troll or genuine. It’s so stuck in its own world that you can’t help but continue reading on. It’s incredible in a new(at the time, at least) and unique(again, at the time) way.
I suggest that anyone should at least take a peak at this wonderful fanfic that finally thought outside the box. I haven’t read it in a long while, but from what I can remember, unlike most So Bad It’s Good and Troll fanfics, it’s safe for all audiences to read, although I certainly wouldn’t let a child read this over the actual Harry Potter books.
