A lot of stuff to go through, and I'm years late to this party, I know. If anyone stops by after one of the many resurrections, at least they can have some answers -- either on this forum or the Way Back Machine or whatevs.
First off,
cheers, Soniti254. It warms my black heart to know that some people were paying attention. Especially back in the day, it felt so hopeless trying to fix this site when most everyone was railing against me for... reasons?
Looking back now, it seems pretty apparent that their little chat group was quite the echo chamber. Things the old new old staff said there just were not reflexive of reality -- including things they themselves wrote in their own Staff forum. Current Year Mints would like to refer to this phenomenon as "Blue Man Bad".
As for who owns this site, it is still Kindar. Bagel is still keeping the lights on. I don't know if he knows he is still paying for it.
This is one of the big issues with KRR; it can disappear at any time, beyond any of our control. I don't think Bagel will ever let it go as long as Kindar wants it to stick around, but even that doesn't matter.
This place was down for most of the year because of the host. Turns out, it was a problem that could be fixed.
It might not be next time.
See, neither Bimblesnaff nor I have FTP access to this site. Remember that my main function here was adding a backend so a staff (that never materialized) could more easily manage this place; of course I had a way to edit pages still.
However, we are still severely limited as to what we can do. Particularly: upload size.
There is also a question of how much more time we want to spend maintaining this site, especially given that it could disappear at any time. I added back the Passport system (which the old new old staff demanded I remove) mostly as a troll.
It is weird that I care more about keeping this place chugging along, even if it is just for archival purposes -- especially considering that I have absolutely no nostalgia or allegiance to this place. I just think the fans deserve better, even if it is just a handful every blue moon who thinks "Oh yeah, I remember that place."
See, as long as
some PHP still functions on this site, I can keep KRR on life support. And the htaccess files, I guess. If something goes wrong there or a bunk htaccess file gets uploaded, we're screwed, because no one will have any way to recover this site.
Well, I suppose Kindar would, but, y'know...
I think this thread exemplifies a lot of the issues KRR has faced, especially towards the end: people want to help, but people don't know what they can do to help. This is better than what some of those late-term staffers did, which was have nothing to contribute and then be an active detriment to the site, but I digress.
Basic HTML isn't hard, and PHP isn't necessary. That was the point of me automating everything on the backend. As I often mention, Bimblesnaff got his start here
curating the splash page. You don't really have to do a lot to do something.
The big issue is that automating something new with the Passport (or even some of the
old things that I've seemed to have lost the files for) would require work. I'm not saying it would necessarily be a
lot of work, but is it really worth it if it could all disappear?
I mean, almost ten years ago, it all disappeared, and it was through no bug or a funder shutting off the lights. Putting all of the old stuff back in place wasn't any new development, so it wasn't a real concern about wasting time. (The Passport was also closing yet another security hole by getting rid of CuteNews.)
As far as fansites go: Serebii.net. That place still exists, and I actually use it on occasion, too, since it has a pretty good raid den map for SwSh.
And clearly, I don't much care about these forums. I was never a big KRR forums fan, even back in 2007. I think I actually had an account before that. Not shaming anyone for liking the forums, but these (or some of the blokes) were not exactly my bag.
Forums can be good. They are entirely dependent on their patrons. I much prefer forums to the single-stream salt-mine that is Reddit.
Even then, I'm not banning Keeby. It takes a lot for me to ban someone
on a platform. Anyone who had a problem with him could have easily blocked him.
Wouldn't mind having some more moderators. That is a zero effort thing I can do to keep this place chugging a little longer. The problem isn't the spambots so much as it is old accounts with easy passwords being compromised.
But other than a gag now and then, I can't see myself doing more than just fixing this place whenever it breaks. It is depressing how many hours I sank into this KRR, setting up for great things, for not even no return, but
negative return.
And 'Snaff and I are actually older than you gave us credit for -- mid-thirties at the time of this thread's highest activity. Neither of us have any family to speak of, but we do have other hobbies.
Mostly, tho', we have jobs. And I've been using KRR as an excuse not to do my job as much as I really should these past few days. Guess I should stop procrastinating.
It was a fun trip down memory lane. Beat the
Storybook again. It's still relevant.
I really wish I had some sort of way to back up this place should the worst ever happen.
There was definitely more good than not here. Shame the not won.
