Wow...just...wow.
If that's true they should just stop making reviews all together.

they obviously don't realize that some games won't seem great right away but normally get better later on. -_-

Double post I know, but shut up.

I finally got around to commenting on this article. Been meaning to for a while now. Here's what I said:

Quote:
"So, 7.5 is a reasonably good score for any game, but for a Nintendo first party game, based on one of its best-loved franchises, it just isn't good enough."

I....let's look at the list of traditional IGN Kirby review scores in order of release, shall we?

KDL - 8
KA - 8
KDL2 - none, sadly
KSS - 8.5
KDL3 - 7 (most fans I've met consider either this or KSS/KSSU to be the best game in the series, by the way)
K64 - 7.5 or 7.9 based on the time it was reviewed
KNiDL - 8.5
KAM - 8
KSqSq - 7.8 (wait wait wait the game that is generally considered the absolute worst in the series got a higher score than returns to dreamland? huh.)
KSSU - 7.9

If you average all those together, you get a 7.9. Apparently "Good enough" for a nintendo first party game is only four points higher than the score you gave it. what?

I had originally decided to steer clear of x-men destiny since you guys said it sucked, but if what was among my top five favorite games this year was a disappointment, maybe I should stop paying attention to your reviews. Seriously.

Wait, so they gave KSS an 8.5, but they gave the remake a 7.9? They're the same game, IGN!

Dang, they really are ignorant. -__-

Exactly!
And they gave dreamland a higher score than kssu and KDL3! what?! dreamland had no copy abilities and was only 4 levels long! I mean I know it's understandable since it's the first game in the series but giving it an 8?!

You should be questioning why the other games aren't any higher than that rather than saying KDL1 deserves less.

yeah, dl1 was a great game. it compensates for being short by being really hard. or maybe i'm not good at platformers. /shrug

How does being hard make a game good?!
dl1 was a bad game. But that can be said for the first games of allot of series.
SMB1 was bad. It was glitchy, it repeated levels and just made them harder, and every boss was the same except with new abilities.
The most dl1 should get would be like a 6 or 5.

I vehemently disagree.
I loved DL1 because it was difficult, I also loved it because I'm a die hard Kirby fan but that's beside the point.

For some games, extreme difficulty is the selling point. The reason being that people will line up to take on that challenge, if it were difficult because it was a poorly thought out game that'd be one thing. (Little Red Hood comes to mind.)
But, a game can be incredibly entertaining if it's difficult for the right reasons. Examples of this would be Super Meat Boy, Castlevania, DL1, The Legend of Zelda.

DL1 was not even kind of bad. It was solid, played perfectly well and worked fantastically as an introductory platformer. I still love DL1 to this day, and in some ways I'm kinda sad that it's fallen by the wayside for a lot of newer fans.

I don't see why you'd give a 6 or a 5 to a game that does something brand new for its genre, is not at all glitchy, has good music and is pretty graphically impressive for its system. Really the only problem with the game is it's short and that shouldn't really take more than a point off the final score.

it keeps me playing it. yesterday i spent fifteen minutes trying to get past the first room on bubbly clouds before giving up in frustration. i will keep doing that on and off until i beat the entire game. it has issued a challenge. i enjoy challenges.

It's bad compared to other kirby games.
If you compare it to kssu, it's going to look like complete crap. If you compare it to kirby's adventure, it's going to look OK.
And why would being extreamly short not take off a point of the final score?! I mean, where is the replay value in a game that's only 4 levels long?! You could easily beat it in under an hour. I could understand giving it an 6, but a 7 or an 8 is downright redicoulous. The game is very low on features, also, no copy abilities and the only extra mode is... Uh....Extra mode. Seriously.

Really? when a game is that frustrating in makes the game non-enjoyable.Just look at Megaman3, being hit by top man only 3 times makes you die.
And besides, Dl1 isn't THAT hard. One time I almost beat it when I only had like half an hour.
A half an hour long game. wow.

Everything you just said is wrong. You should feel bad about that.

The fact that you don't is just sad.

Why should I feel bad about hating on a one of the shortest games ever?

yeah, i beat the normal mode easily. i've only gotten to kracko on extra, but then a game over and i can't seem to make my fingers do the right things to dodge all the things. it's fun, though. i never thought i'd get past kabula.

First of all, you are refusing to take the game in context of the time it was released, so you're basically saying "yeah if a game was released today that had these sprites then it would suck" though not even that is really true since there's been such a push for more retro looks for games lately. Other people look at the game from the perspective of "for a game that was released in '91 this is pretty damn impressive".

Secondly, your argument has broken down from "this is an old game that is glitchy and crappy and looks bad and is also short and that is why it is bad" to "this game is short and that is why it is bad". Nice to see someone stick to their guns.

wut

1. Graphics are the least important part of game development? When "Would you rather play a game that has good gameplay but poor graphics, or a game that has great graphics but poor gameplay?" is legitimately A Question among gamers? When gamers and critics alike will look down on a game if it doesn't have superior graphics? Graphics are what actually draws some gamers to the Kirby series. Heck, the survey I filled out for either Mass Attack or Return to Dream Land for Club Nintendo asked me directly if I wanted to buy the game for its graphics. Nobody should be so concerned with graphics that they overlook the gameplay, but the fact remains that a lot of people, amateur and professional, enjoy playing nice-looking games. So this is kind of like saying cinematography is one of the least important things in filmmaking.

On that note:

2. Just imagine playing a video game with no music. No sound. I don't mean you just decided to press mute on the game like many gamers do when they aren't feeling the sound (or can't have the volume up anyway), but that's just how the game was designed. And not for any artistic reason, either: it just has no sound. Can you imagine a Kirby game without any music or sound? Would it be even half as fun? Music is another draw to the Kirby series. If it wasn't important I doubt Satoru Iwata would've interviewed the sound team as part of his Iwata Asks for Kirby's Epic Yarn. Again, it's like filmmaking: background music enhances the audience's experience. There are certainly times when the music is used inappropriately, or when it hinders rather than helps, but that's when somebody's doing it wrong. That doesn't mean the whole concept needs to be thrown out. Just--seriously, imagine playing your favorite Kirby game without sound. Ever. Still the game you love?
