Okay some people are taking issue with the fact that we've been giving out colour tags as prizes for contests and things, so let's have a big vote.

If we decide to keep them, everyone gets to keep them and more will be given out every so often for trivia prizes or arcade prizes or whatever.

If not, all users who are not currently staff including members who had previously been told they could hold onto their colour tags will lose their colours.

It's the only way to do it fairly.

We seem to have had a little tradition around here of keeping colored names on former staff, so if those non-staff get them then I don't see why other non-staff shouldn't.

yeah; that's the reason why other non-staff started getting them in the first place.

edit: it's sort of the way custom titles used to be way back, actually. admins would get custom titles and every once in awhile someone would make a "post here if you want a custom title" topic and they'd do it for you and it was great. ` ^`

Main issue here is people not being able to tell who's staff. I'd be fine with keeping it if there's some way to make this difference obvious (as in to the point they don't need to look at a user's profile page or the staff list).

We could instate a sort of IRC-inspired system with + and @ and whatnot in front of each staff member's name, but that's the best I can think of...

By the way, I don't mind if we keep them or get rid of them. I can understand the reasons as to why only staff should have colored names, and I can understand keeping them around as special prizes and what not. I just hope people don't start seeing colored names as some sort of status symbol or something..

Yeah, I'm fine with going either way, but it's fun having them. As soon as they start to become a status symbol or colour name members start flaunting their colour names, they've got to go, though.

I, as a new user have no problem with the color tags. Just sort of confused on who's a moderator and who is a user. Maybe all moderators should have a same color for easier know? I think that'd be a good idea. Then we all would win.

I feel the same way on this issue as I do others, I wouldn't hurt my feelings either way, I don't get confused when it comes to telling who's who, but I've been here long enough to know by now.

Would it be possible for Mod's and Admin's to have a frame of sortss around their names? That way this would no longer an issue. I don't know if it's possible, but it's an idea.

A frame might be a good idea. In the meantime I'll poke around in the admin area and see if there's anything I can do that's relatively easy and wouldn't require (hi disk) custom mods. ;)

otherwise another obvious solution would be to make it so staff have to have their staff rank in their custom rank, hurr hurr

For brackets or IRC-type things, I suppose you could just edit the names instead of custom mods? Like Amika could become @Amika or [Amika] or whatever we go with. Though I guess since there is a name size limit that could potentially turn out to be problematic?? I dunno.

Couldn't the first post in this topic have just been edited to have this poll in it? Why the hell was the original topic locked and this one made when they're about the same thing? Makes no sense.

Anyway, there's nothing inherently wrong with adding brackets to staff member's usernames, but dare I say that seems unbelievably silly and unnecessary? You guys seem to have distinct reservations when it comes to removing username colors to the point where you'll do anything to prevent having to take them away from regular members. I don't really get it.

I mean, we have reservations about doing so because we don't want to remove them? Also, apparently the general vote is in favor of them staying so I don't really see a point in getting rid of them.

I think most people just don't care enough to say they should be removed rather than actually being 'in favor' of them, mamthew.

There's also the possibility that the people voting in favor of username colors are the ones who have them themselves and just don't want them taken away regardless of what small issue they may cause with confusion. Of course, I'm on the exact opposite side and asking for their removal despite having one myself. Funny how that works.

I think I have an alternative, but I require comments. *points to current rank, refresh if you don't see the change*

Cyan - Approval Queue Member / Waddle Dee
Black - Member
Red - Admin
Blue - Moderator (Forum Specific)
Green - Moderator (Global)
Purple - Kindar/Bagel

Edit: The color blocks in mine are for example purposes only, right now I'm "Black" in terms of board power.

Edit: Fixed Blue/Green

Well considering green signified global moderators and blue signified forum specific ones before, I'd recommend switching those color indicators around. Regular members don't really need a black username color (or one at all), so leaving them as not having one is what I think is for the best.

Other than that, the format you're suggesting seems entirely fine from my perspective.

Nonononono, look closely at my rank image and compare it to yours, though the color indicators do need swapped for blue/green in the list.

Oh, you're talking about changing rank images. I'm an idiot.

Yeah, that's fine, I guess? Still not as clear cut to who is staff and who isn't as username colors are but that works for the most part.

The one thing I care to mention is that it'd be a pain in the ass changing all the existing rank images. Don't forget we have all those helper and ability ranks.

why don't we do that to just the staff ones and have it just say "Staff" along the side? I feel like the words should fit and that would be a lot less work.
